Choosing a name for your baby is one of the most exciting and meaningful decisions you’ll make as a parent. After all, the main question asked when a new baby arrives is, what is their name?
Sometimes the naming decision is easy. Our first born was always going to be Brandt. But when our second son was born, I'd already used my boy name! So it was back to making lists and trying to find the perfect name for son number two.
Here are some tips to help you find the perfect baby name.
1. Consider Meaning & Significance
Many parents choose names based on their meaning or cultural significance. Whether you want a name that symbolises strength, love, or heritage, researching name origins can be a great starting point. For example, the name Harvey means battle-worthy and reflects strength and valour while Suede is primarily a gender-neutral name that means from Sweden.
2. Think About Family Traditions
Some families pass down names through generations, while others prefer unique and modern choices. If honoring a loved one is important to you, consider using a family name as inspiration or as a middle name.
3. Say It Out Loud
Is the chosen name easy to pronounce and does it flow well with your surname. Try saying it in different tones to see how it sounds in daily life. Also, does the name have longevity and flexibility? Is it a name that will see your child through to adulthood?
4. Check Initials & Nicknames
Make sure the initials don’t spell something unintended and consider possible nicknames that may arise as your child grows. Although, this can sometimes be impossible to predict as other children will create nicknames you may not have even considered. Our second son is Jamison and we expected him to perhaps have the nickname Jamie, but once he started school, his friends called him Jammo and he has been Jammo ever since.
Most importantly, choose a name that feels right for you and your baby. I knew as soon as I saw our baby girl, her name was Capri and not Cassidy, Flynn or McKenzie which were three other names on our list.
